I am looking at the tags in Kete Christchurch http://ketechristchurch.peoplesnetworknz.info

I have derives a list of all the tags used 

e.g. http://ketechristchurch.peoplesnetworknz.info/en/site/all/topics/tagged/1392-zetland-hotel    Zetland Hotel   

I have noticed that some Tags seem to duplicate, triplicate and more

e.g.  
http://ketechristchurch.peoplesnetworknz.info/en/site/all/topics/tagged/10015-st-lukes-halswell    St Lukes Halswell
http://ketechristchurch.peoplesnetworknz.info/en/site/all/topics/tagged/10016-st-lukes-halswell    St Lukes Halswell
http://ketechristchurch.peoplesnetworknz.info/en/site/all/topics/tagged/10017-st-lukes-halswell    St Lukes Halswell   

these all seem to retrieve the same items so I am unsure how they were created - or more important how to resolve to just one tag...

Any wisdom appreciated. Thanks

Not sure what the circumstances are that created them, but it's possible to merge them via the application console as a programmer.

With a small number of taggings, such as what you have linked to, how I would do it from the web interface is this:

1. edit the tagged items to remove tags, save
2. edit the tagged items to add back the tag, consistently choosing the first instance of the tag name if it appears from the drop down list, save

Hopefully that does the trick.
