Topic: adding sub baskets...

Topic type:

I'm relatively new to Kete so forgive any stupid questions. I'd like to create a basket within a basket as a way of categorising content. For example a Local History basket that has within it Historic Buildings, Cemetary Records, Genealogy Records as well as general content. Is that possible?

The short answer is 'No'.

The long answer is that what you want to is perhaps better done with topics and related items. Here's an excerpt from my talk about baskets that I give during a training:

Topics

Topics are a main way we organize ideas around a subject and how we show related ideas (tags are another way).

  • Topics are how we relate material to each other in Kete.
    Audio, Documents, Images, Video, and Web Links as well as other topics can all be related to a topic.
  • You can have rich relationships to other topics through extended fields (more on that later).
  • Topics have types to tailor the fields in the form to the topic type.
    A Person topic type may have a "Date of Birth" extended field. An Artist topic type (because it is a Person) will have "Date of Birth", but may also have a "Exhibitions" extended field, too.

Baskets

Baskets can be used like Topics (organizing related material by putting it in a container), but in MOST cases using a Topic is preferable.

  • People often want to organize material online into Folders and see Baskets as the equivalent "container". They are NOT meant to be used this way.
  • Baskets have a lot more maintenance overhead than a topic. They usually have their own homepages, they have their own membership to be managed, etc.

Baskets defining feature is organizing who can do what to the resources within the basket.

  • This makes baskets a great match for groups within an organization.

Baskets also provide a set of controls to how the material they contain is handled and presented on the site.

Baskets also provide a common face, the Basket Homepage, for the items within.

 Hope that helps. You could also use tags to group material, as well.
