Is there a way we can paste into an item, including images, whereby the the images are present in the article but not separate images within the kete (illustrative tables, graphs etc)?

Yes - by using the html code.
See http://tauranga.kete.net.nz/remembering_war/topics/show/1252 where some (not all) are actually images within wikipedia (CC licences of course).
