Can we change the default size images are viewed at? I'd prefer the default size to be large.

As pointed out, yes you can change image sizes.

Once the change is made at server side to make it happen to each item you need to touch that item.
Adding a tag is ok - and then some how in the background the default image size changes. Kete Magic
And a good opportuniy to add more tags!
Not it has an impact on your slideshw if you have one
