Tēnā koutou katoa,
Re this item on the agenda for discussion:
Features for Future Releases
Open discussion on what the community would like to see added to Kete. Participants are encouraged to begin coordination for implementation. Last year a number of features were discussed, but not implemented because no resources were assigned to them.
Is there a list and/or minutes re what was discussed last year? As a newbie it would be great to see what's already been mooted and consider what our wish list may mean in terms of collective resourcing.
Ngaa mihi

Kia ora Claire,
Here are the minutes for each day of last year's meeting:
http://old.kete.net.nz/site/topics/show/228-kete-community-day-notes-monday-24th-november-2008
http://old.kete.net.nz/site/topics/show/230-kete-community-day-notes-tuesday-25th-november-2008
The second day has the discussion specifically about future enhancements. You might also want to check out the various enhancement topics that were follow ups to the meeting:

Note the related topics are where you find most of the descriptions of unimplemented enhancement ideas.
Cheers,
Walter

I'm trying to sort out for myself the point of the Kete Community meeting together. What do we want to achive?
Last Meeting
At the close of last years meeting we came up with a list of enhancements which people 'claimed' in terms of either doing or funding and a task list for a governance working group.
So 2 things we need to do from last meeting are:
Governance
The interim project team will:
- Define a vision for a governance and legal structure
- Define the purpose of the governance board
- Consider the stewardship of the code (copyright, etc)
- Consider a funding model
- Develop a proposal with regard to structure for feedback prior to the next community meeting with an eye to ratification at the next community meeting
We have not done this although some work was done. (Note to self: ask Walter to bring the document outlining support options from Katipo's point of view.)
Enhancements 2009
There was a list of of enhancement work which were claimed for doing or funding. Would be nice to quickly see what stuff got done, what hasn't but will and what has been dropped.
Community Meeting 2010
So what do I think we need to achieve?
Community
- Who are we?
- Where are we currently up to with our Ketes.
- Share the learning: stuff thats been succesful and stuff that has bombed.
- How can we help each other in terms of sharing skills and tools and training and motivation?
I am a bit worried about APN Ketes who appear to have been given these great tools but no context or background or guidance in how to 'sell' them in their commnunites, how to make gorgeous content, how to make them 'sing'. Kete is not a magic bullet but it is a great tool for engaging your community, marketing, etc.
Collaboration
- Where next for Kete development?
- Whats coming soon - ie already done or funded?
- What enhancements do we want?
- Can we co-fund enhancemenst - and how?
Governance
The working group has been a big bunch of slack-bums in this area. Makes me question whether it is a big enough area to sort out given the lack of motivation for us to address this issue?
Facts:
- HLT owns the old.kete.net.nz domain name (its safe)
- HLT owns copyright of the code for all work done by Katipo for clients (so the code is safe too)
Problems:
The main problem is how to fund the work needed to maintain the code and 'package' it for easy download and install.
Idea 1: When new enhancement work is funded it includes paying to integrate the new code into the whole. BUT this means that the whole financial burden falls one one organisation when we will all benefit.
Idea 2: Organisations co-fund enhancements thus spreading the financial burden.
Idea 3: Paying a yearly subscription to fund enhancement work which we will all benefit from. BUT how do we decide on what work will be funded from this pool? Which gets us back to a governing body again...

From Jackie Gurden (West Coast)
A part-timer being employed to promote the West Coast Ketes for the next 6 months.
Q1: What purposeful programmes have been carried out successfully that we could adopt?
Q2: Looking ahead, what happens for these community Kete when Digital Strategy funding runs out. How do we make sure that the potential that Kete has is recognized and marketed?

Can we come up with 6 project ideas we could collectively work on this next year? Maybe market with Digital NZ

said Citizen scientist
Community contributions to the national databases will only be appreciated and effective (eg in biodiversity monitoring and predictions) when there is a system of 'grading' input and ranking the citizen scientist. Does anyone else have a parallel case? Do you have any system already working in kete, using metadata / extended fields that we can apply for the TERRAIN groups ? www.terrain.net.nz Most groups will soon have kete baskets. All have GIS sytems for data analysis and want to share information with national agencies - RSS feeds.
